Digital Exhibition
The most recent iteration of This Inescapable City is a web based exhibition funded by the Canada Council for the Arts. It is a poetic exploration of landscapes, cityscapes, and waterscapes by ten guest artists and the three collective members. The exhibition is an invitation to notice where you are in a new way and to dream of different geographies.
The digital exhibition is the culmination of past iterations of this piece.
Past Iterations
The first workshop of This Inescapable City took place in 2018 along the shoreline of Lake Ontario at Sunnyside Beach. The collective then continued to develop the work through a residency with The School of Making Thinking in Pittsburgh, PA.
The work of the residency culminated in a site-specific ambulatory piece along Sunnyside Beach, which was workshopped in 2019 for a small audience.
When the pandemic paused plans for a live performance of the piece, the collective created an audio version to be experienced by audience members at any body of water. The piece remained site-specific insofar as it encouraged audience members to experience story through their immediate surroundings, while also extending to multiple locations. The audio version of This Inescapable City was presented at the Halifax Fringe Festival in 2021. This same audio version served as the creative prompt for the most recent digital exhibition.
